VOIP Phone Services
By Dwilson
If you've never heard of it before VOIP stands for "voice over internet protocol" and is a newer phone service that uses your broadband to dial out. A lot of these services help you save somewhere up to 90% off your phone bill. A lot of people are used to having to spend up to $100 a month JUST for phone services whereas if you choose VOIP, you end up spending much less. This is a great service whether it's just for a residence or even better for a small business where you would end up spending a huge amount out of your revenue on phone services. As long as you are able to use high speed internet, you're good to go! One of the best features of using VOIP is that if you're traveling and on the road, you can take it with you wherever you go. If you're hotel room gives you access to high speed internet, no more having to worry about those high hotel phone bills anymore.
Some people worry that they will have to give up their home phone features they may be used to, such as call waiting, conference calling, and voice mail but you are still able to utilize these with VOIP. There are even certain plans if you need to use it internationally. Here's how it works. If you are using a phone-based VOIP service, you would simply do things the same way you use a regular land line, just pick up the phone to dial out or answer it. If you're using a computer-based service you use a headset with a microphone plugged into your computer. MOST VOIP servers allow you to call anyone, but some may limit it to just other VOIP users, so it's important that when you are looking into getting the service you find out if there are any limitations to it.
If you are calling long distance you also want to make sure that they are giving you the unlimited long distance services. Some VOIP servers may charge a small rate for long distance calls which you may not mind if you're really not calling long distance often but for some they call it every day. You want to make sure your server is very up-front with you about such fees.
If there is an emergency and you need to dial 911, VOIP comes with a feature called "Enhanced 911". There have been some issues with some users having trouble getting through to an 911 operator so if this is a major problem you may want to consider using VOIP as an alternate phone service in the home.
The voice clarity is still excellent when you are using VOIP. You may have heard it is not as good as a land line but servers have done a lot over the past few years to improve it, and now it is mostly outstanding.
More About VOIP
If you've had the same phone number for years, you may be concerned over having to change it. With most VOIP services, you are able to keep the same phone number you have had. Again, you will want to check with the server you choose to go with to make sure this is possible. You are able to take this number with you when you travel as well.
When you choose to use VOIP services, you will need a few items of equipment. Most VOIP servers give you that equipment for free. If you choose to cancel the services, then you would return the equipment to them. If you are interested in buying your own equipment, you do have the option of doing that. You will need a good headset. There are many different types that you can choose from from as low as $19 up to the upper hundreds. If you're using VOIP for business you may want to invest more money into a good headset. Some headsets even come available with bluetooth capability. There are also several different types of VOIP phones to choose from. You will want to shop around to see which one would suite your needs. There are several books out on the market if you're confused about the whole process you can purchase as well. You will also want to check out the different VOIP routers. Getting the right one for your needs can really make all the difference. There are even some wireless options you can look into.
As always when you are looking into something new, it is advised to go online and check out the different reviews of services and items. Ask around your family, friends and coworkers to see if they are using VOIP, and if so what server they are using, what equipment they have, and where they bought it from if they like it. The more you know about VOIP services, the better prepared you'll be to make sure you get exactly what you want and need.
