Buying An HDTV: Common Mistakes

By

So, you're looking to upgrade that big old standard def TV to a fancy new high definition model. That's cool. However, before you go shopping, make sure that you avoid these common HDTV buying mistakes.

Spending Too Much

I put this first since far too many people overextend themselves when buying a new TV. Sure, those high end models look good in the store, but it's not worth the ugliness that will be showing up on your next credit card statement if you're not careful. Before you go shopping, set yourself a budget and stick to it. If you can't find what you're looking for in this price range, wait and save more money. It's just that simple.

Not knowing the differences between the TVs

If you don't know the difference between LCD and plasma TVs, you'll want to make sure you learn before you make a purchase. LCD TVs are probably the most popular option right now, due to their light weight, thinness, and other good qualities. However, plasma TVs are great for sports fans looking for the smoothest picture in fast moving images. Check out both types, learn the differences, and make your decision.

Buying The Wrong Size TV

You don't want your TV to dwarf your room. On the other hand, if you need a spyglass to watch the game, you've probably gone too small. To help balance things out, try out this formula: viewing distance / 3 = minimum TV size. This will help you start in the right place and choose a reasonably sized set. A 32" HDTV might work great in the bedroom, but not inside a very large living room.  Size up your situation and see/

More Mistakes

Not Planning for HD Content

Sure, having an HDTV is great, but not if you're only getting standard def content.  Your DVD player can't output a high definition signal, and your cable package may not offer HD channels.  For the movies, you will want to step up to a Blu Ray player, which provides stunning visuals when compared to all other formats.  For the cable or satellite, call up your provide and make sure you have an HD package.

Not Budgeting For Accessories

When buying an HDTV, you will find that you will need to get things like cables, TV stands, and more.  These can add up very quickly, so I would make sure you have planned for these when making your original budget.

So, this are just a few things to avoid when HDTV shopping.  Follow these tips, and you're sure to come out with a great TV that you can enjoy for years to come.
