Weight training is an increasingly popular way to get in shape. Whether the goal is to gain strength, lose weight or gain muscle mass, working the body with weights is a great way to accomplish these goals. Some benefits of weight training are, increased muscle size, and increased strength in the ligaments and tendons. Below, we will examine some equipment that is used for weight training, and what the function is for each piece of equipment.

Dumbbells are a staple for weight training. They are easy to use, and it is also easy to increase your weight as you progress. Dumbbells come in very light weight from 1lb and progress upward from there. It is important to choose a weight that you are comfortable with, and can perform 8 - 10 repetitions using that weight. As your strength increases, you may use a dumbell that is a bit heavier. Dumbbells are great for bench pressing on the incline or decline, single arm rows, bicep curls, and much more. When increasing to heavier weight, it may be necessary to use a pair of wrist straps, to make holding on to the heavier dumbbells easier.

Kettlebells are fairly new to the gym, but have increased in popularity in the last few years. A workout using kettlebells is fun, and is a great way to increase size and strength. The great thing about kettlebells is that it only takes one or two for a good workout, and you can work out at home, if that is best for you. A kettlebell looks like a bowling ball with a handle on the top of it. The weight for kettlebells starts at 35lbs, and increase to 53lbs, then 70lbs and even 100lbs. These are similar to dumbells, but make for a much harder workout because it takes more muscles to stabilize the body using kettlebells, because they are a bit more awkward and a little harder to handle than a dumbbell. Bodybuilders are not the only ones incorporating kettlebells into their workouts, MMA fighters are now finding that kettlebells help them to increase their strength and stamina.

The barbell is a piece of equipment that has been used for years in the weight room. It is a versatile way to perform many different types of exercises.. A barbell is one long bar, that is usually around 30lbs. Weight can be added to both ends of the bar as needed, and is effective at helping to build muscle due to the intensity of the movements done with it. Some exercises that are commonly performed with a barbell: bicep curls, bent over barbell rows, the clean and jerk and many more.

A Smith Machine is often used with a barbell in many gyms. This is a great way to perform exercises with heavy weight, if there is no spotter available, to assist if needed. This machine is like a rack for the barbell, with stops that may be placed, so that the barbell does not slip too close to the person working out. This makes it safer for someone to exercise alone in the gym or at home. Some exercises that are performed on a Smith Machine are squats, deadlifts, rows, bench press and more. This is a very versatile piece of equipment that is a useful addition to any weight training routine.

The leg press machine is another great exercise machine that is used to work the quadriceps and hamstring muscles. The exercise is performed lying down on the back, and the machine can be adjusted for individual height. The weights are plates that can be adjusted, so that each person can set the right amount of weight for their own needs.

The medicine ball is also used a great deal, and is a good alternative to dumbells. Medicine balls come in various sizes, from 2lbs to 12lbs and up. These are great for overhead exercises, such as woodchoppers, and also for doing medicine ball weaves through the legs for abdominal work. Medicine balls are also good for holding while doing squats for added resistance.
